The Trifle Tragedy

I made this trifle, which will be the front page picture in the food section, with recipe and directions. Then I took this photo. Then Tina and I agreed it was entirely too much temptation to have around for days, so I decided to take it to the nurses at Perry Hospital as a thank you for being so nice to Wally when he was hospitalized.
I got it nicely wedged in on the front seat, and took off, imagining how surprised the nurses were going to be. Then I nearly missed Morningside (the street the hospital's on), made a quick left turn and the whole thing turned sideways with the top half sliding down between the carseat and the door. I turned around and drove back home. We are eating the bottom half all the same. I will spare you the details of cleaning all that whipped cream, pudding, cake, strawberries and blueberries out of my car. I do not mention the sad fate of the trifle in my story about it.

Comments:
Good heavens it's gorgeous. Now tell us about the one you made in 1975. Come on, tell us about that one too.

Unlikely as it may sound, there actually was an earlier disaster which sporcupine remembers well, involving my creating a spectacular red, white and blue dessert for the Fourth of July. I had seen a dessert on a magazine cover that had strawberries and blueberries arranged in a spiral pattern on a large "flan" (a giant version of those little things you buy to make strawberry short cake). I bought the flan and meticulously arranged the blueberries and strawberries on it. it was to have whipped cream piped around the edges. However, the blueberries and strawberries were just kind of sitting there, and I decided it needed a glaze. I didn't want a blueberry glaze or a strawberry glaze because I knew I'd wind up with purple fruit somewhere in the process, so I decided on a simple sugar syrup I mixed sugar and water and boiled it vigorously. So vigorously in fact that it reached the candy stage unbeknownst to me, and when I poured my "glaze" over the cold strawberries and blueberries it hardened just like a lollipop. I could have hung the whole thing on on the wall as a permanent decoration. (Unfortunately I didn't take a photo, since it was quite beautiful, if completely inedible)

at our office, we would have just scooped it up and picked out obvious trash and then chowed down on it.:):)it is a beautiful trifle. you really should have done a before and after shot for the blog.:):)

Why didn't I think of that? Tina and I just packed the remainder into a big Cool Whip tub and have been eating it for a couple of days. It aged well.
By a curious chain of circumstances, tomorrow's HHJ has 5 pages of news, 3 pages of sports and 8 (eight) pages of food.

I don't think that anybody would eat something from the floor of my car, but you're right. I should have taken a photo of the half-trifle.
Here's a question. What newspaper will have 5 pages of news, 3 pages of sports, and 8 pages of food tomorrow?
Barely, I'm going to Wednesday night supper at your church tomorrow.

had i been able to check sooner, i would have met you at my church, today was arraignment day. i have never gone to wednesday night supper at my church since usually wednesday is a court day for me. you should probably volunteer for vbs at my church since i'm not doing that this year either due to trial weeks.

I went to your church to take our new reporter on her first big interview which was with a young lady who needs a kidney transplant. Not a big crowd, but lots of good food and company. I got a copy of the yellow cookbook and will have some photos and a story this Wednesday.

my sunday school class is trying to sort out what kind of fundraiser we want to do for amanda's transplant. her parents are in my class. i look forward to reading to story.
